Dates: Saturday, February 4 and Saturday, February 11, 2023
Time: 10 AM to 3 PM
Cost: RAL Members $225; Non Members $240
Let the watercolors flow in this exciting new workshop taught by award-winning Virginia watercolor artist and teacher Kathleen Noffsinger. “Celebrating Your Creative Talent” is designed for intermediate to advanced watercolor artists and explores the use of clear transparent color to create paintings that are exciting in value, color dominance and choice of subject. The artists will complete challenging exercises designed to push them to try new aspects of using the fabulous medium of transparent watercolor and take them out of their current comfort levels of painting.
Demonstrations as well as one-on-one instruction will be presented throughout the workshop. This workshop is an in-depth “color” class for students who have a basic knowledge of watercolor. Kathleen will be teaching lessons in “no mud” color mixing and formulas for vibrant neutrals using the paint colors on her palette. Kathleen will also share her four “color palettes” to help you choose compatible “exaggerated colors” and her secrets for achieving clear vibrant “no mud” washes that enhance a center of interest. Intermediate level painters will make studio color charts and all artists will work on individual paintings with their own choices of subjects.
Workshop Outline:
I. Introduction to Celebrating Your Creative Talent II. Technique vs. Creativity
II. Kathleen’s Painting Plan – The Road Map to Great Paintings
a. Thumbnails (Using Viewers)
b. Positive and Negative Shapes
c. Value Studies (Using Red Film)
d. Creative Thinking (Identify Your Excitement)
III. The Pigments
IV. Color Basics
V. Color Exaggerations
VI. Creative Painting Techniques
VIII. Finding the “Artist” in Your Work
Because this is a class about pure-pigment color Kathleen will be discussing specific manufacturer’s paints by “brand”. For this reason, if you are planning to buy new paint she highly recommends that you purchase the brands listed on her personal palette list. If you do not need to purchase paint, you will be able to use what you already have and then use the knowledge gained from this workshop to make future purchases. Kathleen will be demonstrating with those colors listed on her palette list.
Supply list will be sent via email after students register. Please contact Kathleen directly with any questions: noffsingerart@gmail.com
