Catherine Kauffman

My first love has always been portraiture – especially paintings that capture a moment in a person’s life. I have found that I can treat landscapes, still lives and other genre as if they are portraits of a place at a particular moment in time. I have lived in the Northern Neck for over 30 years, and it seems there is an endless bounty of life here. I came to RAL Art Center as a pastel artist, and I still work in pastels for quick plein air studies that occasionally turn into finished works. But my primary medium is oil paint. I work in a style that incorporates Impressionism, but actually and most often falls into Contemporary Realism. I hope my viewers can find their own memories in my paintings and will cherish those memories as family heirlooms.
