This two-session class will take your oil paintings beyond alla prima, i.e., painting wet into wet all in one go, into more traditional methods of oil painting.
The first session will involve discussing and experimenting with your own painting palette and the differences between paint brands, transparent vs. opaque vs. semi-opaque, and warm and cool colors. The concept of lost edges, soft and hard edges, atmospheric effects, and a few compositional ideas will also be introduced. In the afternoon, the students will begin (and possibly finish) two to three small black and white paintings that will be given five days to a week to set up. Students may need to complete their underpaintings at home in the first couple of days following class.
The following week, in Session 2, students will be introduced to a variety of painting mediums that can be used with transparent or semi-opaque paints to develop color and depth in the underpaintings they prepared the week before.
This class is useful for all genres of painting in oils, whether portraiture, representational, or abstract. The instructor will assist with development of pleasing compositions, adaptations from reference photos and setting up values. There will be some discussion and demonstration of temperatures and color mixing.
Materials, Etc.
Painting surface - Students may work on any surface they are familiar with. Â Bring several (3 to 5) new surfaces that have not been toned (we will start with white) in sizes that are manageable for you (5x7 to 11x14) depending on how quickly you work.
Brushes – Even on small surfaces, students will begin their paintings using large, flat brushes. One larger round brush is recommended for one of the glazing techniques.
Oil paints - Bring new paints and a palette you are comfortable using.
Other supplies:
a roll of blue shop towels,
a couple of palette knives,
a can of odorless mineral spirits with a secure lid,
a jar or cup for holding used brushes,
a solid glass or wooden palette (paper palettes make the mixing more challenging),
a note or sketchbook for making sketches and taking notes,
a pencil or pen,
reference photos if you are using them.
Note: Â One of your surfaces will be used to develop a reference grid for you to use in the future. Â The instructor will provide samples of various mediums for students to sample and explain how each works differently using examples and demonstrating how to use and apply them. Standing and tabletop easels are available in the studio.
